Reading and Language Arts

The reading program at Hillside is based on multisensory instruction. Children learn to read by a visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic approach. Phonics rules are integrated continually throughout the day as students read and write. Strategies are taught to the student individually and in small groups. read more...

Science and Social Studies

The Hillside School uses science and social studies instruction as a vehicle to teach critical reading and thinking skills necessary for understanding factual information. Teachers plan skill and strategy-development lessons using the framework of Pennsylvania Department of Education standards for science and social studies at each grade level. The emphasis is placed on acquisition of strategies through child-centered learning. This makes “how to learn” as important as “what to learn”.
