Science and Social Studies
The Hillside School uses science and social studies instruction as a vehicle to teach critical thinking skills necessary for understanding factual information. Teachers plan skill and strategy-developing activities within the framework of Pennsylvania Department of Education’s guidelines for science and social studies at each grade level. The emphasis is on student strategies and child-centered learning. Content instruction includes accommodations, modifications, and interventions that connect subject material to the student’s abilities, while challenging them to apply critical learning skills. The content area curriculum is unique because Hillside teachers identify skills to develop at each grade level and list age-appropriate strategies students use to learn the material. This makes “how to learn” as important as “what to learn”.
