The Hillside Approach

The mission of The Hillside School is to maximize the potential of the child with learning disabilities through excellence in education.


The Hillside School serves students whose ability to listen, speak, think, read, write, spell or do math is imperfect.

This includes students with the following:

  • Specific Learning Disability (SLD) in Reading – Also known as Dyslexia
  • Specific Learning Disability (SLD) in Written Expression – Also known as Dysgraphia
  • Specific Learning Disability (SLD) in Math – Also known as Dyscalculia
  • Visual, Auditory and Sensory Processing Disorders
  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) – Inattentive, Hyperactive, Combined presentations
  • Executive Function Deficits


How do we serve these students?

  • Small classes of no more than 8 students
  • Learning designed to meet individual needs through accommodation and modifications
  • Research-/Evidence-based curricula and programs
  • Multisensory instruction – auditory, visual, kinesthetic presentation
  • Explicit strategy instruction
  • Endorsed instructional duration and intensity – Interventions integrated across the entire school day
  • Assistive technology to support learning needs

  • Speech/Language for all students
  • Integrated, process-oriented curriculum
