The Hillside Boost

Class times 9-10 AM and 10:15-11:15 AM.
The Hillside Boost program helps students keep the skills and strategies they learned in school and offers targeted skills sessions in reading, writing, math social skills and creative drama. All with small class sizes and a multi-sensory approach.

READING
9:00-10:00am
Phonics the Fun Way (Grades 1 – 2): Reinforce phonological awareness skills and support your child’s excitement for reading. Project Read review of phonemes, blends, and Red Letter Words. Visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile activities that provide practice using the sound-symbol relationship to read.
Phonics/Reading (Grades 3 – 4): Review of Project Read Lessons. Includes fluency (speed, accuracy and expression). Review of phonemes, blends, syllabication, Red Letter Words.
10:15-11:15
Meet the Author (Grades 2 – 3) Reading Comprehension: Emphasis on using reading strategies to improve overall comprehension and fluency. Make meaningful connections between language and written word using poetry, author study and stories.
WRITING
9:00am – 11:30am
Writer’s Block (Grades 4 – 5): A course for the reluctant writer. Students will create webs and learn how to use the 5w’s to build brainstorming skills. Emphasis will be on adjectives, metaphors, and similes to help students expand their ideas in writing. Poetry and computer use will also be included. Cost for this class is $300.
MATH
9:00am – 10:00am
Time Well Spent! (Grades 2 – 3): Tackle the tough concepts of time, money, measurement and number patterns through manipulatives, hands-on activities and practice.
10:15am – 11:15am
Review of Basic Math Concepts (Grades 1 – 2): Use of manipulatives and activities to review adding and subtracting of numbers. Introduction to Touch Math.
Go to the Head of the Class! (Grades 3 – 4): Review of basic math skills – addition, subtraction, division and multiplication facts.
LANGUAGE
9:00 – 10:00am
Strategies For Being A Better Listener (Grades 1 – 2): During this course listening strategies will be explained and demonstrated. Students will have the opportunity to practice using the strategies for various listening activities.
10:15am – 11:15am
Strategies For Being A Better Listener (Grades 3 – 4): During this course listening strategies will be explained and demonstrated. Students will have the opportunity to practice using the strategies for various listening activities.
SCIENCE
9:00 – 10:00am
Kitchen Chemistry (Grades 3 – 5): Hands-on chemistry using everyday materials. We will cover important chemistry concepts such as matter, mixtures, and chemical reactions. Experiments are designed to strengthen skills such as following instructions and organizing your materials. Students will measure and mix with beakers and test tubes—bring an old, over-sized shirt to wear as your lab coat!
10:15am – 11:15am
Preview of Physical Science (Grades 6 – 8): Preparation for physical science in middle school. Students will participate in active learning about mass, volume, and density. At the end of the week, students will apply their knowledge to solve a design problem involving floating, sinking, and buoyancy.
