Assistant Head of School/Director of Curriculum

The Assistant Head of School/Director of Curriculum is charged with the comprehensive responsibility for all programs involving students and faculty.  When the Head of School is not available or on-site, the Assistant Head of School will be in charge.  This is a full-time exempt position reporting directly to the Head of School.

School Operations

  • Act as the educational leader of the school, responsible for its day-to-day operation; directs the activities of the members of the school instructional staff in the performance of their duties
  • Foster an environment in which learning can take place, a school climate which is supportive and which reflects high morale
  • Grow a culture in which unity is achieved through tact, helpfulness, respect, and recognizes individual differences and the special abilities and strengths of each teacher
  • Work toward a resolution of all problems – both routine and unique – as they arise
  • Keep the Head of School informed of the general programs, activities, and problems of the school; visibly present in all areas of the school
  • Participate in the admission process with the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment
  • Support the development and implements operational policies (The Student/Parent Handbook, Employee Handbook, enrollment and medical forms)
  • Revise Crisis Management Guide and conducts safety drills
  • Participate in developing the annual budget
  • Serve as an active member of the Leadership Team, Admission Team, Social Committee, and Board Committees as assigned
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements of government regulations and agencies, and maintain the educational standards established by the state and by those agencies that examine and accredit the school
  • Support the school and its leadership


  • Make recommendations to the Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty
  • Order instructional materials
  • Maintain program accredited by the PA Department of Education for the orientation of new teachers and in-service training of all teachers
  • Write the Professional Education Plan accredited by the PA Department of Education to provide professional development hours as mandated by the state
  • Conduct regular meetings with faculty that deal with routine school matters while stimulating an exchange of ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern
  • Consult with teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures
  • Observe, supervise, and help evaluate the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum
  • Supervise the teaching process, and reviews and evaluates the academic programs
  • Provide for the academic guidance of students; oversees the grading and the reporting of methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement
  • Maintain student discipline consistent with school policy; monitors students’ adherence to established school rules
  • Assist with writing grants for funding for training, programs, materials, etc.
  • Oversee and assist with the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities programs, including the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs
  • Collaborate with the Integrated Technology Specialist to build and coordinate the educational technology program
  • Observe teachers in their classrooms upon request and offers insights for the enhancement of effective instruction 
  • Oversee and assist teachers in the uniformity in assessment, parent reporting, and academic standards
  • Act as a substitute teacher in the classroom
  • Connect research to practice
  • Maintain knowledge of current and cutting edge research in the field of learning disabilities through professional reading and participation at conferences
  • Assume responsibility for other projects as assigned by the Head of School


  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in education preferred
  • Ten years of progressive experience in teaching at elementary/middle school level
  • Proven success at working collaboratively in educational leadership
  • Background in child development
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills

Educational Technology Specialist

This faculty position is full-time for 10 months and reports directly to the Head of School.


  • Instruct students, teachers, staff, and parents
  • Develop whole class instruction for students and teacher training in Assistive Technology (AT), Google Drive, Google Classroom, coding, videography, software, internet safety/cyberbullying, etc.
  • Instruct students on how to use AT to support their individual diagnoses or learning challenges
  • Educate families on their student’s needs and use of assistive technology
  • Document assistive technologies and provide comments on students’ report cards
  • Research and evaluate new developments in educational/assistive technology particularly for students with language-based learning disabilities
  • Preview and test hardware, software and websites for possible use at The Hillside School, complete cost analysis for each and purchase 
  • Troubleshoot minor software and hardware issues (when Junction PC is not on site) and assist Junction PC when they have to remote into a computer
  • Communicate with vendors
  • Prepare documentation for grant proposals as requested/needed
  • Create technology budget and maintain detailed records for annual audit
  • Manage and administer online subscriptions for students, faculty and staff
  • Provide assistance regarding device usage, software applications, and the general instructional use of technology in the classroom across all curriculum areas
  • Perform related duties as assigned/required

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred in Educational Technology, Information Technology, or Computer Science
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology hardware, software, and related web-based or other tools
  • Demonstrated success working with colleagues to identify instructional needs to enable/enhance student learning
  • Classroom teaching experience preferred
  • Fluency and proficiency with Google Apps for Education
  • Strong organizational, technical, and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
